Message 1 – The Life, Ministry, and Legacy of Lloyd-Jones

Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899–1981), affectionately known as “the Doctor,” was one of the most influential evangelical preachers of the twentieth century. Leaving a promising medical career to enter Christian ministry in 1927, he served first in Wales and later for nearly thirty years at Westminster Chapel in London. Known for his powerful expository preaching, theological conviction, and deep concern for the spiritual vitality of the church, Lloyd-Jones exercised an influence that extended far beyond his own congregation. This session will explore the remarkable life, faithful ministry, and enduring legacy of a man whose preaching and writings continue to serve the church today.

Message 2 – Lloyd-Jones on Preaching 

Preaching is quite possibly the subject most closely related to Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Convinced that the preaching of God’s Word held a place of central importance in the life and ministry of the church, Lloyd-Jones devoted himself to the careful exposition of Scripture with clarity, authority, and earnestness. Famously describing preaching as “logic on fire,” he insisted that true preaching must engage the mind, stir the heart, and address the conscience. This session will explore Lloyd-Jones’ understanding and practice of preaching and consider the enduring lessons his ministry offers to preachers and churches today.

Message 3 – Lloyd-Jones on Revival 

Few subjects occupied the heart and ministry of the Doctor more deeply than revival. Convinced that the church’s greatest need was not new methods or greater human effort, but an extraordinary visitation of God in the power of the Holy Spirit, Lloyd-Jones frequently turned to Scripture and church history to call Christians to seek God for revival. This session will explore Lloyd-Jones’ understanding of the nature, necessity, and history of revival, his emphasis on prayer and the sovereign work of God, and the lessons his burden for revival offers today.

MLJ has often been described as the “20th-century Spurgeon.” But how much did the Doctor and the Prince of Preachers really have in common? Join us during lunch for a fun and engaging discussion comparing Lloyd-Jones and Charles Spurgeon—their lives, personalities, preaching, ministries, convictions, and lasting influence. Along the way, we will consider their similarities, explore their differences, and ask whether Lloyd-Jones truly deserves the title of the “20th-century Spurgeon.”

Message 4 – Lloyd-Jones on Evangelical Unity and Separation 

Martyn Lloyd-Jones believed deeply in the unity of Christians, but he also insisted that true Christian unity must be grounded in the truth of the gospel. His convictions concerning evangelical unity, doctrinal compromise, and separation brought him into some of the most significant controversies of twentieth-century British evangelicalism, particularly following his landmark 1966 address. This session will examine Lloyd-Jones’ understanding of the nature and basis of evangelical unity, the circumstances surrounding his call for separation, and what we can learn from him today in our current situation.

Message 5 – Lloyd-Jones on the Holy Spirit 

The person and work of the Holy Spirit occupied an important place in the theology and ministry of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. He was deeply concerned that Christians possess not merely sound doctrine, but a living and experiential knowledge of God through the powerful work of the Spirit. His teaching on the baptism and sealing of the Spirit, assurance, and spiritual power has been highly influential, but some of his conclusions have also generated significant discussion and criticism among Reformed and evangelical Christians. This session will examine Lloyd-Jones’ distinctive understanding of the Holy Spirit, consider both its strengths and its criticisms, and evaluate his teaching in light of Scripture.
